Consumer and Vendor Resilience: COVID-19

Reports and Resources

During the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional food markets - where millions of consumers in low- and middle-income countries access nutritious foods on a daily basis - posed significant risks for disease transmission. To assess market functioning and strengthen the voice of vendors and consumers in the pandemic response and recovery, EatSafe conducted regular surveys in six countries from September 2020 to December 2021.

On March 1, 2022, EatSafe hosted a webinar summarizing these efforts (see recording). EatSafe produced a two-page results brief, and detailed results are available across two report types.

Interactive Food Price Tool

As part of its COVID-19 response, EatSafe collected data every two weeks on the cost of a basket of nutritious foods specific to the country context (including Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Tanzania). To allow  interested researchers, stakeholders, and users to explore this vast dataset, EatSafe developed an interactive, open access tool.

Along with a How-To Guide for using the Tool, all  data is available for download at the bottom of the page on the Food Price Tool.
