DISCUSSION: How Is Climate-Smart Agriculture Best Incorporated Into Development Work?
Climate change is going to affect global development activities and USAID Mission strategies for the foreseeable future. One way that Feed the Future is striving to respond to climate change is through a climate-smart agriculture (CSA) approach.
What exactly is CSA? It's typically defined by three main objectives:
- Sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and incomes;
- Adapting and building resilience to climate change; and
- Reducing and/or removing greenhouse gas emissions, where appropriate.
CSA is not a list of approved practices or a one-size-fits-all approach; it is an impetus to prioritize climate information, adaptation, and/or mitigation in a given ag development context.
What do you see as potential challenges to incorporating climate-smart agriculture into development activities? How does your organization or project help smallholder farmers address climate-related issues?
