Ask the Expert: Q&A with Jeff Hill on Supporting Food Security Policies in Fragile States

We know that agriculture and food policy is critical in driving agricultural transformation. But what can we do in countries often deemed "fragile" facing complex emergency conditions where institutions are often altogether missing? On June 28, Agrilinks will host a special 30-minute "Ask the Expert: conversation on this issue with Jeff Hill, Director of the Office of Economic Growth and Agriculture in USAID/South Sudan.
Among other questions, Hill will answer:
- What are the opportunities for policy change in a place like South Sudan?
- How do we need to work differently compared to how we work in more stable environments?
- What have you learned from your experience in South Sudan that may be instructive for policy works in similar contexts?

Jeff Hill

Jeff Hill, Director of the USAID’s South Sudan Office of Economic Growth and Agriculture, has served with USAID for over 25 years. Jeff previously served as the Director for Policy in the Bureau for Food Security, where he led U.S. Government interagency efforts to advance globally, agriculture and food security policies of the Feed the Future Initiative. Jeff also managed the USAID Initiative to End Hunger in Africa, the precursor to the Feed the Future Initiative. Over the past 15 years Jeff played a central role in coordinating the U.S Government support for the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Program of the African Union. Most recently, he served as the Chair of the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Program Development Partners Consultative Group to advance donor coordination to support the implementation of the AU Malabo Declaration on agricultural transformation and inclusive growth. He has a BS in Public Administration from Weber State University and a MS in Agricultural Economics and Agronomy from the University of California.
