FAO in Geneva Nutrition Dialogue Series: Bringing Food Safety and Nutrition Together through an Agri-Food Systems Approach
Event Information
Agrifood systems transformation - Policies and practices to support healthy diets and development outcomes across the SDGs
Food safety and nutrition are intimately linked: to achieve optimal human health and wellbeing, people must have an adequate food intake which is both nutritious and safe. In addition to the direct health impacts, problems related to unsafe food impose significant social, economic and environmental costs due to reduced market access, reduced national earnings, loss of household income, and increased household expenses resulting from illness and environmental pressure through food loss and waste. Achieving SDG2 on nutrition will thus depend a lot on ensuring food safety. Yet typically, food safety and nutrition challenges are considered in silos. This FAO in Geneva Nutrition Dialogue in collaboration with World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), will present three national and subnational examples of food safety interventions in Bangladesh, Nigeria and Singapore relevant to bringing food safety and nutrition together through an agrifood systems approach.
