A Randomized Controlled Trial of Akazi Kanozi Youth in Rural Rwanda
The final evaluation of the USAID-funded Akazi Kanoze youth workforce development project in Rwanda measured whether, as a result of the project, youth from rural areas showed a measurable change in employability and employment outcomes. Implemented by EDC, Akazi Kanoze, meaning “work well done” in Kinyarwanda, provided Rwandan youth ages 14 to 35 with market-relevant life and work readiness training and support, hands-on training opportunities, and links to the employment and self-employment job market. Conducted in the project’s fifth year, the final evaluation consisted of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) combined with qualitative case studies and focus group discussions. Overall, the final evaluation demonstrated two major findings on Akazi Kanoze’s impact: 1) Akazi Kanoze youth in rural areas (the treatment group) were more likely to be employed after graduation than a young person who does not participate in the program; and 2) Akazi Kanoze youth in rural areas achieved significant gains in work readiness skills development and financial management.
