[2021-10-07 09:35:08] [Funso Raphael Kutu] Planting of drought tolerant maize has also been a great success in most parts of Africa including South Africa particularly in improving small-scale farmers livelihood.. [2021-10-07 09:38:28] [Adam Saffer] What are the primary constraints to productivity led growtrh? (e.g., irrigation, inputs, mechanization, GAP)? [2021-10-07 09:45:22] [Adam Saffer] Will do. Just posted the question there. I may be wrong but to me, behavioural change is the key to unlock any and all technological advancements, including data collection, analysis, and utilization. [2021-10-07 09:45:42] [Adam Saffer] I did. Thanks [2021-10-07 09:46:40] [Jonathan Gressel] my sceen stills says that event will begin shortly. What is the problem? [2021-10-07 09:47:37] [Paul Gibson] Paul Gibson-Uganda. It is good to see the coordination with Excellence in Breeding and the Accelerated Breeding Initiative. The FtF, GFSS and GCIAR/EiB/ABI coordination links NARS,NGO's, Donors, Local organizations, and private enterprises. Great to see this. [2021-10-07 09:48:56] [Steve Young] Not just prevent outbreaks in pests, but use technology to identify in real-time the difference between beneficial and harmful organisms. Prevention is preferred, but a lot of harmful organisms are already established, so mitigation is really an important focus. [2021-10-07 09:50:14] [Paul Gibson] Paul Gibson-Uganda. Much of the most disadvantaged populations rely on small-scale, mixed farming systems. There is need for much greater understanding of the interactions of the different components of the systems and how that affects productiviity, stability, nutritional diversity, and ecological and sustainability effects. One area of need is crop models that can deal with that complexity. [2021-10-07 09:51:22] [Maria Veronica Gottret] Given that farmers will need to access, understand and analyze essential climate information for short, medium and long-term decisions about their production systems for managing climate-risks, have you thought on what are the competencies they will need for this? This may be important as managing climate risk is more knowledge-intensive than resource-intensive. [2021-10-07 09:51:34] [Paul Gibson] Paul Gibson-Uganda. Intensification at the small-scale producers will need small scale mechanization, and efficient water use, etc. [2021-10-07 09:51:36] [Steve Young] Agronomic practices should focus on resiliency and diversity and how to maintain these fundamental components with technology. We can't rely on the technology without the basic principles underlying the agroecosystems. [2021-10-07 09:52:51] [Alejandro Ortega] Important is to define how to make technologies available for farmers to adopt them in a sustainable manner. Studies must be conducted conduct to determine if technologies are effective, safe, feasible, and scalable, and commercially viable. [2021-10-07 09:53:18] [Francois Stepman] https://paepard.blogspot.com/2021/10/usaidfeed-future-updating-global-food.html [2021-10-07 09:53:46] [Jonathan Gressel] Tried - now just keeps saying its loading.. I look forward to reciving the recording. [2021-10-07 09:53:55] [Peter Ewell] Excellent data and interpretation, thank you! [2021-10-07 09:53:56] [Eugenia Saini] Thank you for this excellent seminar. From FONTAGRO https://www.fontagro.org/es/ we have a pipeline of 164 projects ($124 M), 43 in current execution that gathers hundred of scientists that would be interested in linking to US organizations to promote interdisciplinary research and achieve a better impact, especially in small farmers in Latin America and the Caribbean. Happy to connect with your organizations and work in collaborative research. [2021-10-07 09:54:31] [Paul Gibson] Paul Gibson--Uganda. Digital innovations need to be integrated into comprehensive digital ecosystems and information systems, smoothly integrating input acquisition, market info, electronic funds transfer, and two-way info pathways including farmers, extension, and technical experts. [2021-10-07 09:58:06] [Geoffry l Smith] Geoff Smith, International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), SE Asia Region (includes ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand). We are doing a lot of work on sustainable food systems and metrics https://ilsisea-region.org/event/sfs2021/, and exploring sustainable agriculture intensification metrics. [2021-10-07 09:59:11] [Jessica Landman] Is USAID undertaking a deep dive into these questions regarding research strategies and needs for aquatic foods (aquaculture and wild caught) either with NOAA or the Sea Grant universities as it undertakes the strategy refresh? [2021-10-07 10:00:01] [Michael Saltz] Hi Jessica! Please use the Q&A button on the bottom right to address questions for the speakers. Much of the employment and income in low-income countries is in the downstream part of the agri-food system. Investment in secondary urban centers can help this non-farm sector to expand rapidly. [2021-10-07 10:24:53] [Paul Dorosh] Synthesis: https://www.ifpri.org/publication/ethiopias-agrifood-system-past-trends-present-challenges-and-future-scenarios-synopsis [2021-10-07 10:26:08] [Lucy Keatts ] The current pandemic has impacted not only health, but also value chains, livelihoods & food security. Disease emergence rates are increasing and land-use change for agriculture is a major driver: food security research and interventions must consider long-term implications of associated climate and other environmental change to ensure greater sustainability and resilience of our food and broader socio-economic systems. [2021-10-07 10:28:32] [Andrea Menefee] Will there be any work on local processing along the value chain? [2021-10-07 10:29:03] [Jeremy Venable] Work in Malawi is done in coordination with both the Soybean Innovation lab and the Peanut Innovation Lab [2021-10-07 10:30:49] [Caroline Smith DeWaal] Glad to hear Rob Betram mention food safety as a continuing area of focus. Critical to ensure nutritional uptake and help address stunting. [2021-10-07 10:34:11] [Michael Saltz] Sorry for the technical difficulties everyone! Rob's connection is breaking up. It should settle soon. [2021-10-07 10:36:51] [Francois Stepman] @Robert Bertram: How can European and US support to agricultural research in Africa be better coordinated? [2021-10-07 10:38:30] [Francois Stepman] An example is aflatoxin control: https://paepard.blogspot.com/2021/09/report-mycotoxins-and-postharvest.html [2021-10-07 10:38:55] [Michael Saltz] Hi Francois! [2021-10-07 10:43:36] [Hillary Egna] How do you see the Strategy working with China going forward, or not? Thank you. Challenges are education & affordability. ROI is quick - 3-4 months. We need lowest cost techs & access to finance eg "rent-to-buy" MFIs, models/platforms. We are launching a $70 irrigation pump w/ hosepipes. 20% of farmers have renewable water but 4% of farmland is irrigated. More work is required. According to the FAO, fish is the world’s most widely traded food commodity - with most fish in developing countries from wild-caught fish - and one of the most nutritious.
