[2021-10-07 09:48:56] [Steve Young] Not just prevent outbreaks in pests, but use technology to identify in real-time the difference between beneficial and harmful organisms. Prevention is preferred, but a lot of harmful organisms are already established, so mitigation is really an important focus.

There is need for much greater understanding of the interactions of the different components of the systems and how that affects productiviity, stability, nutritional diversity, and ecological and sustainability effects.  One area of need is crop models that can deal with that complexity.

This may be important as managing climate risk is more knowledge-intensive than resource-intensive.

Challenges are education & affordability. ROI is quick - 3-4 months. We need lowest cost techs & access to finance eg "rent-to-buy" MFIs, models/platforms. We are launching a $70 irrigation pump w/ hosepipes.  20% of farmers have renewable water but 4% of farmland is irrigated. More work is required.

[2021-10-07 10:57:13] [Barbara Best] It will be important to integrate research on improving wild-caught fisheries management into the new research strategy, given the overwhelming evidence of their critical role in food security, nutrition and livelihoods, especially in Africa and Asia.   According to the FAO, fish is the world’s most widely traded food commodity - with most fish in developing countries from wild-caught fish  - and one of the most nutritious.
